Brake Cylinder

A brake cylinder (commonly a master or wheel cylinder) is a critical component of a hydraulic braking system. It converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure, pushing brake fluid to engage the brake pads or shoes, slowing down or stopping the vehicle. It consists of a cylinder housing, pistons, seals, and brake fluid ports.

Manufacturing Process

  1. Material Selection – Usually made from cast iron or aluminum for strength and corrosion resistance.
  2. Casting/Forging – The cylinder body is either cast or forged to form the basic structure.
  3. Machining – CNC machines are used to achieve precise dimensions and smooth internal bores.
  4. Heat Treatment – The component undergoes heat treatment to enhance durability.
  5. Surface Finishing – Coatings like anodizing or zinc plating are applied for corrosion resistance.
  6. Assembly – Pistons, seals, and rubber boots are fitted inside the cylinder housing.
  7. Quality Testing – Each brake cylinder is tested for pressure tolerance, leaks, and proper operation.
